School Psychologist Jane Sturgell & principal Ed Skowneski presented on Twain Elementary's data meetings to examine student progress & adjust instruction. Keys:
8) Principal roles:
- Teacher teams meet 3x/yr to analyze, by grade, progress for each student K-6
- Teacher team consists of all grade level teachers & support staff such as SE teachers, psychologist, principal, social worker, teacher consultant, etc.
- Purpose: Look at assessment data & review social & emotional issues.
- Assign students Tier 1-3 & recommend interventions
- Accomplishments – Many students post significant gains due to teacher team:
- Identifying student learning strengths & weaknesses
- Providing interventions for strugglers
- Altering class instruction as general weaknesses are noted
- Intervention list can grow beyond the resources available, so team must modify it & look at class instruction
- When interventions are dropped (not enough resources) students often slide
- Need to further develop exit plans
8) Principal roles:
- Help set expectations for meeting agenda
- Ensure norms (staying on task) are followed
- Align subs & release teachers for meetings
- Created a uniform approach for all elementary data meetings
- Supplied a teacher consultant to help organize data into meaningful, user-friendly data walls
- Allowed for floating subs to free teachers for mtgs
